"Books Fall Open"

I did this piece for the Society of Childrens' Book Writers and Illustrators monthly illustrator challenge.  I sent a copy of it to my mother, a former first grade teacher, and she said that when she looked at it this wonderful poem that she used to teach her students popped into her head:
"Books fall open,
You fall in,
Delighted where,
You've never been.
Hear voices
not once heard before,
Reach world through world
through door on door.
Find unexpected
keys to things,
locked up beyond
True books will venture,
Dare you out,
Whisper secrets,
Maybe shout,
across the gloom,
to you in need
Who hanker for
a book to read."
